What is it?
Occupational therapy (OT) services for parents and caregivers are designed to support and enhance their ability to manage everyday tasks and responsibilities, particularly in the face of stress or challenging circumstances. Occupational therapists work with parents and caregivers to develop practical strategies that improve their well-being, optimize routines, and promote healthier functioning within the family dynamic.
What is the focus of therapy?
- Developing healthy routines for morning/bedtime, mealtimes, self-care, etc.
- Promoting organization, time management, and problem solving skills needed to care for self and others
- Exploring strategies for successful home management - house work, parenting, meal preparation, financial management
- Establishing coping skills to manage stress, childrenโs behaviors, and own emotions
- Education on sensory systems and personal preferences that may impact tolerance of daily life including - specific environments, children, activities, sounds, textures, etc.
- Leisure exploration for improved quality of life
What is the focus of therapy?
- Caregivers adjusting to a new diagnosis for their child
- Caregivers who are struggling to co-regulate emotions and manage their childrenโs behaviors
- Caregivers who feel overstimulated by the sensory input (sounds, touch, etc.) of their children
- Caregivers who feel overwhelmed by the daily routines and role of caring for their children
